There is no-one in his inner circle who is willing to speak up for the average Joe in his company. Middle managers, while often their hearts are in the right place, truly live up to their title because they are too impotent to stand up for what their hearts are telling them. Management is somehow simultaneously lethargic and aimless, like a maitre d on the Titanic who doesn't want to put any ice in your cocktail, no matter how many times you tell him it's getting warm, and no matter how many pieces you just saw break off onto the upper deck.
