Everything else is pretty bad. This is the former Ohio National Financial Services in case someone reading this is not aware of that. People were sitting around for multiple years with barely 15 hours of work to do during the week. They would actually leave their house (since they were remote) during work hours and go swimming at the gym because they had absolutely no work to do for weeks or months at a time. This was strictly in IT. I do not know about other departments but my understanding from talking to others is that other departments experience lots of downtime (while others are slammed with work? Makes no sense.) Management does not listen when you tell them you barely have any work to do and you ask for work and are given none. If they want to pay people to watch YouTube or play video games for 25+ hours a week, who are you to stop them? It is a dream job for a majority of people to get paid to mess around at work. People doing tasks that aren't part of their job description because no one else wants to do it but they also don't belong in the department doing the work. Pay is substandard and I required multiple 'bonus' increases to get to the median level for the industry. Yes, you read that correctly: the median. They don't care about job growth. I asked a previous supervisor about getting into software development and they did not offer me any advice or help me to network with people. Just a 'google it and see what people say about it'. They are so absorbed in their work they forget how to manage and when they do manage, it is not beneficial to anyone. Not training others on business critical tasks and then laying off the only people knowledgeable enough to do the tasks without assistance. Several people have been rehired after a layoff because of the complete lack of foresight by upper management. Then, once the person is rehired, management still ignores the fact that additional people need to be trained. They only look at you as a number and not as someone who matters to the success of the organization. Management does not listen to their subordinates. People get written up for innocuous things rather than the manager having a conversation before writing someone up to squelch the behavior. The company refuses to do any type of research to get off the legacy systems. The youngest mainframe developer at the company is in their 50s. It can take years to convert entire blocks of business to some other platform. There are legacy systems that only have one developer (and after the most recent layoff: zero) to support it and they are only a part time employee. Upper management absolutely does not care about the feasibility of these systems or the precariousness of having very thin support for the systems. The company has at least 10 different admin systems that have to be used or integrated for any project. Have they ever thought about trying to maintain everything on a single system? Less training, less margin of error, common development support. Avoid this company like it's Covid Part 2. They had two layoffs in a row in February 2024 and more are coming. They will likely start outsourcing positions abroad here in the next 6-12 months. All of this is a result of being run by private equity. The company is managed by two Canadian pension funds (so, effectively foreign owned) and since they are foreign owned and have no loyalty to YOU or ANYONE ELSE but their bottom line and the pension plan participants, you are expendable.
