1. No motivation since compensation is based on nearly flat and everything is based on personal relationship. For example, you had a great year and assume your manager is happy with you at the personal level, you will get a rating of 4 and your raise will be 4% (+/-0.25%). Somebody did not do so well and enjoyed the whole year, he/she will get 3.5%(+/-0.25%). 2. Hard work does not work since most of people do not work so if you work, they all with start politics and you are done. 3. Promotion is rare and hard to come by. 4. No career management and motivation: They loose bright people or make them one of them. 4. False promise and manipulation are at their peak. For example, you have done great, you will get promoted in the very near future, etc statements like these are very frequent to come by. Managers also trick by saying -- see you did great and here you get 300 options. But, please note the strike price will be over $20, which Corning's stock hardly crosses means you get nothing. 5. Everything is political. I was there for few years, but never seen anything got decided by merit, but it was always political. 6. People are struggling for their survival since lay-offs are frequent to come by. God forbid, but if one looses the job meaning simple re-start your career due to two reasons: nobody other than Corning does what they do in the USA and the place is so small that there is nothing in there. In short, move to a new place and change your career -- that's the only option left. 7. Salary and compensation are below average. These days they hire a PhD at 80-85K. Only company, I know, where a PhD and MS join the company in the same band, i.e., B. 8. Spouse has no option but corning and if your spouse would like to work for Corning and they will use it to pay less and/or at lay-off times, you could be in the list. 9. Lay-off list preparation: Again politics. Does not matter how bright, you are, but what matters is how you are with your manager in the personal terms. 10. Diversity is another issue. The company is not accepting any diverse opinion and/or idea since they only want you to change as they want you to. Movers and shakers -- please leave as soon as you can. 11. Small place in upstate NY -- nothing but work, but tax etc is very high.
