Working with the other employees that were swindled into employment under false pretenses. We all shared a common bond—as we huddle together in the corner—of being unexpectedly yelled at, celebrating hypocrisy, and witnessing UFOs being propelled by anger as they suddenly make impact with the office walls.

The owner is still learning how to be a manager. He was heard on the phone saying, “I am not a good manager,” but takes it personal and get obnoxiously defensive if any attempt is made to help him with it. On the other hand, he talks about his 11 years of owning a business and that he shouldn’t be questioned because of his “experience,” but seems to have a tough time seeing that his “experience” hasn’t helped him understand management during the same 11 years. The owner stated, “I am not here to teach,” as he hires nothing but recent college graduates looking for professional engineering growth. The turnover rate is so bad that nobody has been there longer than a year, besides the owner. There is no self-reflection on his end, and thus a root cause analysis eludes him, as does sound judgement, causing him to be stuck in a perpetual cycle of “small business” mistakes. He cares more about quantity than quality. Past projects continue to haunt the office. Projects that should have never made it out the door of the office without a proper QC process come back being called “unbuildable”. He refuses to take the time to review drawing sets and blames his first year college grads when they come back with errors after being forced to perform their own QC on their own drawings, and then the drawings go straight to being blindly stamped by the owner. The process feels more like an inefficient sweatshop than something we went to school for.
