Working in the sports industry is hard work but it is exciting and yes, there are opportunities to meet and work with some great people (including the players). Pay within the sports industry can be lower than corporate America but is making progress. As our viewership and support for the WNBA increases, so does our revenue and our ability to increase wages accordingly.

Vantaggi

It was inspiring to work in women’s sports and be part of a growing league. The mission and potential of the sport made the work feel meaningful at times. I also formed strong relationships with a few colleagues and people I still call friends today. Unfortunately, none of us are still there, which speaks volumes about the deeper issues within the organization.

Svantaggi

Working in women’s sports is often driven by passion and a belief in building something greater than yourself. Unfortunately, that spirit was lacking during my time with this organization. While the long hours, weekends, and event-heavy schedule were expected and part of the territory, the culture and leadership made it an unsustainable environment for growth or well-being. The core issue stemmed from the top. The President/CEO fostered a toxic environment rooted in fear, blame, and ego. Instead of inspiring or empowering employees, he often spoke to people in belittling or unprofessional ways. Leadership was less about collaboration and more about control, with HR operating more as his personal shield than as a support system for employees. There was little to no accountability for his actions, and unfortunately, that mentality trickled down through the organization. There was no clear structure for growth, raises, or recognition. High-performing employees were often undervalued, and appreciation was rare. I was there during the ill-fated attempt to launch another professional team, which was an effort that was poorly managed and unsurprisingly failed. It was another example of leadership pointing fingers at staff and setting unrealistic goals, rather than taking ownership. It's telling that the front office has undergone almost a complete turnover in recent years. Many of the most capable, passionate people chose to leave. I would say this was driven out by low pay, lack of respect, and an unhealthy culture. If you're considering working here, go in with your eyes open. The CEO is still there, the head of HR is still there, and it just seems all the bad leadership still remains.
