Vantaggi
If you have a good management team, it makes all the difference. Most brides are friendly, lovely, and fun to work with. It is fun to work with the dresses and put ensembles together for the bride & her party. I actually prefer working on my feet to sitting at a desk. My fellow employees are nice.
Svantaggi
Hours are way too long- 9:30-7:30 every Saturday!! Breaks & even lunch are not garanteed. Surely there is a labor law against this. You have to be a psychologist to deal with the bride, her mother, & the wedding party. No one is full-time at my store, they purposely keep you hanging. One girl has been there 5 years and easily makes 10-12K in sales per period. They won't let her go full time because they'd have to pay her more & give benefits. Online sales are really cutting into my commission. Brides come in to get sized and then buy a cheap gown from the website. There is no mechanism to address this loss. One asst. mngr is very negative, always cracking the whip, never gives encouragement. Crazy expectations with numbers. All the managers know how to do the formulas for dollars per bride/hr, & zillions of other calculations. We are expected to know these and how we're lacking all the time. If we are extremely busy, all day running on the sales floor, we are still expected to make 20 calls, (phone calls are the holy grail- it's how they think we can increase our business. If I make 20 calls per day, I'm lucky to get one appt. from it, but no one has thought of any other way), calculate & fill in charts with various sales totals, clean and restock the store, data entry, serve every customer all without a break! I know they don't appreciate the consultants but they act like they do. Training is crazy! Old manuals to read & do written exercises. Absolutely no training on the register/computer. I've learned by mistakes, for which you get yelled at, of course. My manager disses people who quit. It is hard, physical work for low pay. I hope to only have to do for a little while longer. I am interested to see how they handle Vera Wang coming on board. I'm sure it will just be more stress for the consultants.
