Vantaggi
They pay an above-average wage for Grand Rapids, MI. The work itself is low-intensity assembly of conveyor belt systems. Hoists eliminates any heavy lifting, which is great for the older worker. It is also safe. The work pace is fast as in any production enviroment. This is not surprising. The experienced workers are more than willing to explain and help with any problems understanding the assembly processes.
Svantaggi
The U.A.W. workers there are VERY dissatisfied and are presently discussing going on strike. I know the wage disparity bothers them. As a "temp" I recieved the SAME wage as union workers that have worked there for 17+ years. New welders, non-union, were being hired OFF THE STREET at $16.00/hr which is almost $2.00 higher an hour than the 17+ yr. union workers currently TRYING to hold onto THEIR jobs! The union employees, in their contract, are REQUIRED to work 2 weekends a month. As a "temp" I was expected to work EVERY day during my 3 month tenure. That bothered ALOT of temps. The work hours are 10 hr days/5 days a week with mandatory Saturdays and some Sundays. That turned away alot of good prospective employees. The raw materials for assembly have SERIOUS gaps in the logistical supply chain at Dematic which is laughable considering it IS a "Logistical Supply Provider Consultant!" Products were not being assembled ON-TIME because of the front office not ordering parts and multiple gaps in their supply lines.
