Vantaggi
At a time when not everyone in the country has adequate health benefits, you can rest assured that you will get a fully comprehensive medical plan for your family. In network doctor visits range from $15 to $35 co-payments. You also receive comprehensive dental and vision care benefits. Duke Health is also a very stable place to be, as there will always be a need for health care. Generally speaking, once hired you are guaranteed to remain employed for the remainder of your career barring nothing incredibly horrific is done. So longevity and security is a plus as well. For those not in management there is typically no need to work beyond the 40 hour workweek unless you are in a particularly unique field. (Once again, that's only for those NOT in senior management.) Tuition assistance for children going to college is a very good perk too, account at times for discounts of up to $8, 000 in tuition costs per semester.
Svantaggi
Duke often says that although they cannot provide competitive salaries for jobs they provide numerous perks and benefits which make life better. The perks are often: educational benefits, less pressure to work "over and beyond" the call of duty, weekends off, and health benefits. Although I definitely agree with health benefits I can't easily agree to the others. Educational benefits are only for University employees -not health system employees (unless you were grandfathered in nearly 10 years ago); senior management does not have the flexibility of "not" being available - the more you are compensated the higher the expectation for availability, and weekends / nights there is an unrealized thought that you still check mail and messages. It is troubling at times to see the amount of money taken to restore hallways or for receptions yet there there is much disapproval when trying to ask for a 3% additional raise (maybe $2K) for an exceptional employee.
