There was, at the store I worked at at least, an awful culture of brown nosing and favouritism which saw some staff essentially getting away with murder whilst others were scapegoated. The pay for what it was is a joke. The bosses liked to make noise about paying more than other chains, but for the actual workload, especially in my understaffed store, it was laughable. Head Office also removed double pay and time and a half for some work days which were often the sole chance many staff had on their low contracts to get additional money. Then they had mandatory meetings for us where we were supposed to act all joyful that they’d made £1bn that year. Shame crumbs were getting given to us. Despite a requirement to give 3 weeks of rotas, this was often not done. In some cases it was the day before the new rota started before you could check shifts. Whilst I had little to no problem with weekend working in itself, when it was decided that this should be mandatory for all staff we weren’t even asked about this, we were just given a shift and told to get on with it. Tough luck if it was an inconvenient shift. Again the favourites got to pick and choose what they wanted. A rotational system where everyone worked either the Saturday, Sunday or had the weekend off would have been much fairer. Lot of technology introduced but our store didn’t have enough for the staff it had and break-downs and crashing was a common thing. We were relying on awful walkie talkies a lot of the time. Managers (or at least mine) were far too quick to give out counselling forms for minor things. Similarly berating on the shop floor wasn’t unheard of, which I thought was deeply unprofessional.
