Vantaggi

Being able to teach students and observe their growth and success is always a joy to every tutor. Being able to network with other tutors and realising that you are being ripped off.

Svantaggi

Based on my experience as a part-time tutor at EduFirst Learning Centre, I cannot recommend this workplace to other educators. The centre is plagued by systemic issues including a profound lack of transparency, disrespect for tutor time, and practices that actively hinder effective teaching. While teaching the students can be rewarding, the management creates an unsustainable professional environment. Key Issues Encountered: 1. Unfair and Opaque Compensation: The advertised "fixed rate" for part-time tutors is misleading. Experienced tutors are paid below market rate, while newer, less experienced hires are offered higher pay. Management provides inconsistent, shifting explanations for this disparity (e.g., citing "years of experience" or "class composition" opportunistically), demonstrating a lack of a fair, standardized pay structure. 2. Disrespect for Tutor Time & Poor Communication: Frequent last-minute requests to cover classes or take on unassigned students. Critical Issue: Tutors are often not notified by management when students cancel, leading to wasted commutes. Compensation for these "no-show" sessions is inadequate and handled inconsistently, with management frequently dismissing valid reasons for absence, such as when the parents called and stated that their child would be attending that session, but did not show up. 3. Teaching Environment Lacking Support: Ineffective Grouping: Students from vastly different academic levels (e.g., Primary 1 to Secondary 4) are routinely mixed in the same subject class, making focused instruction impossible and compromising student outcomes. Attempts to rectify this issues were made by the in-charge of some tuition centres, but from observation, the management has not made any efforts to address this crucial issue. Zero Curriculum Support: Tutors receive no syllabus, lesson plans, or updated teaching materials. Provided resources are often outdated or directly copied from assessment books, raising copyright concerns. Resource Neglect: Tutors are forced to source and print their own materials, often battling malfunctioning office equipment such as the printer, which are rarely fixed or replaced by management, which cuts into preparation and instruction time. 4. Management Unaccountability: The above points stem from a consistent pattern where management avoids responsibility, changes policies retroactively to suit their needs, and fails to provide the basic professional infrastructure required for tutors to succeed. Conclusion for Prospective Tutors: EduFirst Learning Centre prioritizes operational convenience over fair labor practices and educational quality. Tutors should be prepared for disorganization, opaque policies, and a lack of professional support. Your time, expertise, and commitment are unlikely to be valued or compensated fairly here. I strongly advise exploring other opportunities with more professional and transparent management.
