Vantaggi

The only pros of this program are your fellow staff members and what I mean by that is the same people who work as counselors and teachers. The upper management is some of the worst people possible and they will make your job a living hell. The kids at times make it worthwhile as you meet some truly amazing ones. Hanging out with them or playing games really releases some stress. This job pushes you mentally and you can grow a lot from it as a person. Helps you to really realize what your limits are. Teaches you how to advocate for yourself in professional settings

Svantaggi

Management is racist, homophobic, and sexist. They target the staff of color and favor the white staff over them. If you are a person of color they have no regard for your time or physical wellbeing (even if you are terribly sick they expect you to work or make up for the time you were out). Management is hypocritical and will not hesitate to scream at you in front of the children or gossip about you to get you into trouble. There were times when my white colleagues were 30 minutes late to their shift with no repercussions. But as I was walking to my job with two minutes to sphere and I was less than 5 feet away from where I was supposed to be, they proceeded to call and yell at me. If you don't advocate for yourself they will walk over and take advantage of you. You have no free time, you work 24 hours a day. I am not even kidding. There is no personal and work balance. Not to mention they do not provide the materials you need as instructors to teach the class. Head management has told staff that they could leave if they wanted as they wouldn't be missed. The majority of it is highly performative. Your voice will not be heard. You will not be respected. You will not be giving fair and safe working conditions. The women staff members were put below the male staff members and given the stereotypical "women are more maternal" jobs. You are not paid enough for the amount of work you do. Most of the children are rich snotty ones who have no repercussions for disrespecting the staff whether physically or verbally. Management is not there to guide you, they set you up for failure in order to have a reason to put "strikes " against you. For those who were teachers, they did not have the class materials ready especially for the stem-based classes. Instructors had to come up with things on the spot and also did not know what the hell they were doing. Explo will force you to teach subjects you have no experience in despite there being someone else qualified. Favoritism was highly evident. If you don't value your mental health and personal safety, Explo is the place for you.

Vantaggi

Student advisors got a lot more time off than most camp counselors (1 hour off on weekends, and every other morning/night off during the week). The pay was also great compared to most camp counselor-type jobs. It was great to be an advisor to funny and sweet middle schoolers who mostly really enjoyed Explo! Finally, likely as a result of the poor administration, Student Advisors became close to and relied on each other for professional and emotional support.

Svantaggi

The 3-day training did not prepare Student Advisors for even the most mundane parts of the job, and it became a joke among students that the Student Advisors did not know what was going on. (There also wasn't a single returning student advisor, which made it harder to adjust to the job.) During the training, there was no medical or DEI training, which I would expect when working with children. The closest thing was an introduction to the nursing staff and an overview of neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders that just promoted stereotypes about conditions like autism and anxiety. The program is going through a lot of changes and has majorly cut back on how many administrators there are, so admin was stretched very thin. There were constant problems with programming and scheduling, and a lot of disorganization more broadly. While I thought the Office of Teaching and Learning managed the best with their limited staff and resources, there was very little support and oversight given to instructors. The work culture was very toxic, with admin (especially from the Office of Student Life) constantly getting into power struggles with and micromanaging Student Advisors. Admin did not get to know or support Student Advisors, and there weren't any avenues for us to give feedback to the admin. There should have been anonymous surveys for us to voice our concerns in such a challenging work environment. Finally, there was a problematic clause in the employment contract that sounded like they were just asking us to be flexible while working with kids, but it really meant they could change our job description at any given moment, which they did. Many student advisors worked in the main/programming office for the majority of the day rather than with children, as they expected.
