People at the FT are generally extremely smart, talented and driven, resulting in an excellent culture that creates collaboration and camaraderie. Managers are generally willing to help staff have a good work/life balance. Benefits are great with a generous leave policy. The tech is great and the company makes an effort to make available the best collaboration tools which makes life a lot easier.

The pay is genuinely shocking and there are very few progression opportunities. Promotions and pay rises are very hard to come by and the company rarely makes a meaningful effort to help you develop professionally. There is a tacit understanding that because the brand name has gravitas, they don't need to pay people well as it wouldn't be that hard to replace them. Some senior managers extend that conclusion to the way they treat people under them. I imagine this will only get worse as the generative AI/geopolitics combo puts further pressure on the media industry.

Pay is way below market, and benefits are limited. Additionally, inconsistent alignment between leadership and management sometimes leads to shifting or unclear expectations.
