Working with the kids was the best experience, and was the only joy from the job. I was a teacher and the only thing that got me through was teaching the kids.

Do not work here if you are a non black POC, I had an awful experience and I now have PTSD and nightmares about it. I was a camper my self from 2004-2007 and another ex camper turned counselor who was only 18 started a rumor I was racist. All the teachers believed it and I was isolated from everyone. It was a terrible enviorment and the only thing that got me through it were my students. My co-teacher did not get along with me and was not willing to work with me. Admin even sent in one of my counselors as a kid from (2005) to supervise me and take notes during orientation. It was humiliating and made my anxiety worsen and made me feel extremely uncomfortable and paranoid. I finished out the first session and did not return for the second. My saving grace were my students and the Teachers Assistants. I took this job because I wanted to give back the way someone gave their summer once to be my teacher/camp counselor. It was the worst job I have ever had because of the other "teachers" and admin. Out of fear and being young I did not call HR but I wish I had because it was an awful experience. I would not recommend to anyone. Maybe working at ABC, Tommy, or the other camps but do not choose camp Mariah. Honestly I would look elsewhere if you want to be a camp counselor, maybe this experience is across the Fresh Air Fund.
