The old adage that employees leave bad managers and not the companies themselves applies to my case here. My first year with the company was fine; however once this individual was moved into a director position where I became his direct report, things went downhill from there. On his first day in his new director role, he met with me and said "self-preservation was his #1 thing". Everything that was said in that first conversation was making sure that we made him look good. There were no comments made about providing support for our team, or working together as a team, nor anything that indicated he was looking out for anyone but himself. Over the course of the next year, he would lie about so many things; he'd tell people that he completed his deliverables, but actually didn't and got caught on so many occasions by our team and other departments. Whenever I confronted him one-on-one, he would never accept responsibility and gloss over it. He would take credit for ideas that weren't his own. On the flipside, whenever he came up with an idea that wasn't great, he said it was another teammate's idea! He was always quick to point out other peoples' mistakes, but when he made those same mistakes, he never took accountability and blamed others for the mistake. He would never recognize me for a job well done, to include any process improvements I put in place. In fact, it seemed like he was competing with me. He always thought he was right, even when others (besides myself) told him he wasn't, and he just continued to double down and call others 'stupid'. It was all very maddening! Other people on the team saw and experienced the same thing I did. I had a conversation with his boss a couple of times about his behavior, but that never went anywhere. The incompetence and lack of integrity was too much for me and that led to my resignation with the company.
