Meeting so many intelligent Black women

I was eager to start working for an organization that focused on a mission close to my heart – the health of Black women; but early on, I knew GirlTrek wasn’t the place for me. I quickly learned that it was all a show. The cofounders talked down to staff on meetings and regularly bashed employees to other employees. If you disagreed in a staff meeting or on Slack, watch out! They would come for you – overtalking you, bashing you in 1:1s and performance reviews, and even changing your job description to a lesser title or changing your role to something completely different than you signed up for. The cofounders do not have performance reviews conducted on their performance by the board of directors. They do whatever they want and run the entire organization based on their whims. They scapegoat staff when programs fail and blame everyone but themselves when things fall apart. The cofounders prioritize their own self-interests over the success and possible growth of the organization. All they care about is looking good and sounding cool on the podcast and the number of followers on Instagram. GirlTrek is supposed to be a nonprofit group dedicated to helping Black women live long healthy lives instead the cofounders really want to be a media company or the Shade Room. The turnover is out of hand. People would leave GirlTrek and the cofounders would share the update with the staff months after they were already gone. At the end of the season, everyone would be on pins and needles not knowing if they were going to have a job when the season started again at the beginning of the following year. The stress this created especially during the holidays when this annually happened caused some staff to have mental breakdowns. The cofounders run GirlTrek like a ruthless business while they brainwash the staff and volunteers into treating the work as a calling from God. They take advantage of how much the staff cares about the mission and use it to mistreat staff. I am a professional at my job yet, the cofounders never respected my expertise or recommendations. Instead, they wanted me to just execute on their half-thought-out plans. I praised God the day I got another job and was able to leave GirlTrek in my rearview. I do not recommend even wasting your time applying or working for GirlTrek. It looks really good on the outside and you will spend a lot of time trying to understand why things are happening. Save yourself the trauma and horror of being abused and start your own self-care journey. You can walk and be healthy without dealing with GirlTrek's cofounders many abuses.

Micromanaging, belittling staff, don’t practice what they preach to the outside world. They don’t care about the mental health of the staff. They don’t pay what you deserve but love to say “they pay the most competitive salaries”. If you have your own ideas and want a job where you can actually do the work you were paid to do, this is not the job. They want “yes” people who will do whatever they say and when they don’t get the results they like, they’re upset.
