Once upon a time, there was a college student who, by the skin of his teeth, managed to get an internship at Guru. Upon arriving on his first day, the intern was tasked with one assignment - commit some code into the repo by EOD. "What a challenge!", thought the intern, "How am I supposed to learn this codebase and figure out what to do?". It was a truly daunting task, however, he was pleasantly surprised when everybody around him was so willing to help. Thanks to the strong culture of mentorship, he managed to complete his objective and commit some real code by the end of the day. Over the course of the summer, the intern was surrounded by people who were more than willing to help him learn and grow. The level of fulfillment that he received from this experience was far more than he ever expected. Not only was he learning, but he was making real and tangible contributions. "This is great, but how can the company possibly keep these wonderful values as they scale past 10 employees", pondered the intern. The internship eventually ended, but the intern wanted more. Guru agreed to hire him part time while he completed his last semester of college. The part-time employee was amazed by how flexible the work environment was at the company. It was no problem for him to finish up his classes and work in between everything. It makes so much sense to measure accomplishments over hours worked. "Why doesn't every company do this?", he thought. So he graduated college, and immediately came back to Guru as a full time employee. He was so excited to start his career out in the real world at a company that already had proved to him to be forward-thinking and full of opportunity. And Guru was growing rapidly. The employee started working on more and more projects. Always being challenged by new concepts as his team cultivated him. Though the work, at times, seemed beyond him, he was ever motivated by the perseverance and grit of his fellow team members.

The company grew fast. Within only 3 years, the company went from 10 to 75 people. The pace was startling. Guru knew that if it was to scale gracefully and maintain the amazing culture that had developed at the company, an incredible amount of effort must be put into the hiring process to ensure that all people coming into the company align with Guru’s core values. In addition to that, finding the best potential employees required the company to truly engrain diversity, equity, and inclusion into those core values. Guru wasn’t only just growing the company with the best possible people, it was also investing in current employees and giving them opportunities to grow their own careers. When last we left our employee, he was learning all sorts of new skills and taking on challenging and exciting projects. But over 60 amazing new co-workers later he was given the opportunity to take on a new type of challenge and lead a team of engineers. The employee was extremely happy and his faith in the startup was time and time again validated.
