Great Management, High Turnover - Recensione dipendente - Publicist presso Hachette Book Group

Vantaggi

Could not speak any more highly of my coworkers at Hachette. The culture is incredible, especially in an industry that is prone to toxicity. Certain managers go above and beyond to demonstrate their care for employees, and I was offered a raise and bonus after just six months. There is a wonderful emphasis on diversity and inclusion initiatives (but some senior management still seems very out of touch). Overall, of all Big 5 Publishers, Hachette ranks among the best as far as culture is concerned. The office in New York is incredibly nice as well. It feels more like a tech office than a publisher.

Svantaggi

Turnover at Hachette is incredibly high, which makes already intense workloads all the more difficult to manage. Burnout is so high across publishing, and it just becomes exhausting to see your coworkers come and go so often. Some systems seem outdated as well. Pay is standard for the industry but still incredibly low for New York. Company culture varies a TON across imprints and teams, so one employee's experience can be vastly different from another's (I just happened to land at an AMAZING team).

Vantaggi

I initially loved my job. For the first few years, there was excellent communication, at least on my team. The employee resource groups were incredible (still were at the time I left) and the atmosphere was pleasant and welcoming this was prior to 2025.

Svantaggi

After 2024, there was a massive change in leadership across high levels. Layoffs began happening on a rolling basis. Few people felt safe in their jobs. Many people with institutional knowledge were let go. Communication became terrible. Workloads increased but pay did not. Another in-office day became required, with no compensation and not enough places to sit. There was no clear path to promotion. People doing the same work were being paid vastly different amounts, and it didn't match with experience either. Morale dropped and it didn't feel the same.
