People in the trenches (support) are frequently treated like the bottom rung. The opportunities for advancement are slim and the company will prioritize internal hires based on time rather than experience. Also new positions are generally filled from inside even if the person is not as qualified. This can cause problems when people are in positions of development or decision making and are not necessarily the most suited for such jobs.
