The greatest benefit was my mentor and department chairperson, J. Douglas Stewart, who assisted me in learning the ins and outs of teaching adult learners in a school that was job-specific and where academics were not high in their priority list. I learned a great deal from Doug and other teachers how to balance my academic ideals with those of the students and the college.

The greatest challenge was to find incentives that would address both the program requirements and the student's attitudes toward mathematics. I found a balance in using an existing school-created computer program as an additional incentive for them to practice their mathematics skills. It worked admirably with about 85% of the students; I considered that quite an accomplishment for both myself and my students.
