They pay well and have pretty good benefits. They often don't ask a lot in return. They have very effective sales teams for selling to traditional IBM customers. When I was sick my managers first concern was always my getting well first.

Employees are "resources" and the company has a policy of moving most work offshore. The most important consideration for any new project is "How can we staff it with "resources" from China, India, Brazil, etc. Whether they have existing staff that can do it or not is irrelevant. Having the project succeed is secondary at best. If a job doesn't require shaking the customer's hand, or US citizenship, expect them to move it offshore as soon as they can. Company is wildly disorganized at high levels. Their historical 3 businesses are hardware software and services. Hardware and software are basically doomed by cloud computing, and they aren't prominent in cloud computing services. Internal politics dominate basically everything else. Each round of cuts tends to increase the percentage of "political operatives" in the company - since people who are political manipulators rarely get laid off.
