Be you. This is the Industrious motto from day one when you begin working for them. There is an image of the CEO holding an invisible phone as a way to promote the whole be you idea but when it comes down to it, the motto is contradicting. As much as they promote the idea of Be You, they definitely have no interest in the introvert nature. It seems like the only way to grow within the company is by knowing the right people and being able to smooth talk your way in most situations. Everyone around you is pretty much acting like they know exactly what’s going on but most times, you ask something, the answers are vague and flat- asking too many questions is frowned upon. My colleagues label themselves as intellectual individuals but after a while you realize most of them are good at spitting out random facts, fast talkers and have eager to please personalities but no depth. Only a hand full of people know what they’re doing. So, unless you are an extrovert with a go getter personality and enjoy a competitive cut throat environment- you will most likely not get too far within the company. And that is only the beginning. Be prepared to be working for a white company. Stepping into the office, you can count the number of POC. Most of your colleagues are high strung personalities who are only concerned with themselves and have no cultural awareness aside from the ethnic cuisine they’ve tried and places they’ve traveled. The mind boggling part is the company has declared it an initiative to hire more POC to diversify the company- as if they are tokens and it is their job to teach their white employees how to be cultural and diverse. POC aren’t here to add more spice to your bland company. I don’t think the company is aware how that makes those who are already within the company feel - but this is coming from white privileged men, so you can’t expect much. I understand the initiative is created with good intentions - but the affect the CEO’s are hoping to have is too late in the game. Unlimited time off & work life balance is a lie they sell. There is no work life balance- there is an expectation to stay later than working hours and if you’re not, you’re falling below the expectation in most cases. I’ve personally heard managers set that as an intention. The turnover rate is high, and upper management is aware but that’s the thing- they also know you’re easily replaceable with an eager right out of school grad. So, they burn you out until you aren’t able to handle the load, and replace you with someone who is readily going to pick up from where you left off. Hence, why most of your colleagues and managers are super young and inexperienced. Managers themselves are learning how to be better at their job because they have no idea what it means to truly manage a team. You have unlimited time off but honestly with the amount of work you’re given, you rather not take that time off knowing you’re coming back to a pile of work. Those who have been within the company from the beginning, hold themselves at a high regard and have no intention of helping you assimilate. The fact that they started when the company didn’t have standards set in place, they want you to experience the same struggle- rather than guide you through it. It is a sink or swim type of environment and no one is planning to throw you a life jacket. They will critique you for not pushing the envelope and display passive aggressive behavior if you don’t meet expectation. Rather than addressing your flaws or weaknesses through conversations, they document it and overwhelm you with “constructive feedback” after six months of observations. It’s a bit sick and twisted but that’s there way of pushing you to your best potential. More like molding you into a robot. They expect you to be a big happy family- forcing you on these non optional off-sites to spend time together to get to know each other on a “deeper level” but most of it is surface level facades on what is your favorite color and most embarrassing memory. Maybe, the thinking strategically and coming up with processes to help advance the company/team is great- but do you really need to be stuck with your coworkers for three days straight? No. You really don’t. It should not be required. Don’t make your employees suffer through that. There is no clear growth within the company. The idea here is you’re suppose to create your own growth but they have nothing set for your success. If anything, the company sees themselves as a stepping stone to something better for you. When you start working here, you realize everyone is fairly new- and those who have been here from the “start” are most likely two to three years old. The worst part is the interview process within the company. Forget about the interview process to get the job, but if you decide to pursue a different role within the company, you are to compete and go through the same rigorous interview process as anyone new applying. No matter how well you perform in your current position, you will still need to reapply. Lastly. We’re a company focused on improving the quality of working yet our own head quarters is overcrowded with no aesthetic or sense of consideration for the everyday worker. Our office layout is pretty much rows of desks and one break out space- hence making the space only operable for those who enjoy the open floor plan environment. Our bathrooms are horrible- hardly any room to fit into a stall. Our snacks are mundane and the in-house happy hour is a nice way to cheap it out. Most times everyone takes their drinks back to their desks mostly to avoid the small talk. As much as everyone in the company likes to believe Industirous genuinely cares about them- it’s quite evident we are an after thought in their ladder to success. Overall- I learned unless you’re a conformist, who is eager to constantly please everyone around them, and have a life long dream to join a cult- you should run the other way.
