I started at Inpharmation in 2010 as a Biomedical Sciences graduate from Manchester. Joining the company as a Business Development Consultant. This allowed me to combine my passion for sales with a keen interest in the sciences. Since then, I have progressed, and I am now a Director leading the Business Development Team. I have learnt a lot over these years, and I like to think that I can pass this knowledge on to my team, coaching them so that they can experience the same success. Below, I have provided a short summary of working at Inpharmation. The learning curve is steep, but with lots of support on hand. Within a month you are expected to: • Master the art of cold calling and speak with a customer. • Present Inpharmation’s forecasting solutions to the Director of Business Development and the Managing Director. • Start learning the complexities of pricing pharmaceuticals (although this learning never really stops). • Get to grips with a state-of-the-art CRM system (Salesforce). • Attend an offsite sales training course (3 days in the UK). • Understand how to navigate the internal “wiki” system (an archive of customer questions and answers that is continuously added to). The first six months are a probationary period, allowing you to get to grips with everything you need to be a successful BD Consultant. One thing I value, is if you book client facing meetings, you attend them (vs. other graduate roles where you end up booking the meetings and other more senior colleagues deliver them). This experience really helped me (and will help you) to answer questions and to sell more effectively. For each meeting you book and attend, more and more responsibility is handed to you. When I joined Inpharmation, the Business Development team was based in rented offices (not ideal). However, the company quickly grew and purchased offices in Stokenchurch. In 2019, we outgrew these offices and moved to our new offices located just off the M40 motorway in Stokenchurch Business Park. We all have our own office, which really helps when on the phone with clients and when writing complex proposals. Everyone is expected to work hard but also to socialise with colleagues. We lunch together each day, have competitive table football, social events (go karting, laser tag, escape rooms, cocktail making, picnic and rounders, etc.), a Christmas “do” (e.g. The Comedy Store in London), and an annual company strategy week (Malta, Madeira, Centre Parcs).

Interesting and intellectually challenging work throughout my time here, and the projects felt meaningful and worthwhile, which makes a big difference day-to-day. It was great for professional growth specific to the role and I also learned a lot about the wider healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, as well as general business practices. There was early exposure to senior stakeholders in pharma companies, which was also great for development. I also contributed to internal capability projects alongside client work to help develop new products, improve existing offerings, and build the company’s knowledge base. It was really rewarding to see that work have an impact within the company. The office environment was positive for me. A genuinely friendly group of people, and a good atmosphere overall. There were also fun company activity days and an annual away week. I left for non-work related reasons and was genuinely sad to leave a great team.

Delivery deadlines can be tight at times, and there can be very busy periods. It needed good organisation and flexibility.
