I learned so much in my time at Inspire. I got to work on website and sign-up funnel iterations that saw thousands of page views each month and was the Inspire brand's digital front door for prospects and new members. I enjoyed so many collaborations with product, design, marketing, sales, and other folks. In my time, I grew to become an important owner of the marketing website application and its infrastructure. I regularly assisted multiple stakeholders, including external design talent, with updates and the execution of new creative design ideas for the site. I worked hard to support the teams I was on with honest, direct feedback about what we were doing right and what we needed to improve. I'm proud to have met and known so many diverse Avengers in my time at Inspire. There was a serious effort by management to improve diversity, equity, and inclusiveness metrics and establish employee resource groups, but I am far from the appropriate person to be able to tell if you if Inspire actually delivered on its promises there. I am not an unrepresented minority in tech. It was good work supporting the ERGs. I was (of course) blown away by the participation of fellow Avengers and appreciated management's sponsorship and participation, but again, I don't think I could tell you for certain if those efforts were actually successful. I can at least say that the team I left was far more diverse than the team I joined.

Like others, I too noticed the lack of focus and product commitment in the company during my 4.5 years there. It was difficult to spend a lot of time on something, see it fail, and the only reassurance from management was "well, it happens, let's move on to the next thing!" without any real analysis about what went wrong and how we'd improve the next time. I was never promoted, and I never got clear feedback about why I was not trending towards one. It does not help that while there was a career ladder document, it did not distinguish between individual contributor tracks and management tracks for software developers. I had been clear with my manager and management that this extra context and details on how to advance in my career didn't exist, but this need failed to be met. Compensation did NOT keep up with increased responsibilities and my performance within the organization. What felt like a good fit when I joined hadn't changed much accounting for inflation and cost of living increases in those four years. During my time, I supported multiple iterations of the marketing team, sales, Ops, and other parts of the business responsible for new membership. I learned so much about startup growth and how it affects an organization's structure over time; while I was extremely happy with the last team I worked on, it became more and more difficult to effect change by managing up, but I could also see the barriers my managers faced outside of our team towards effecting change. Inspire is exactly what people say about it here. It's a company relentlessly committed to sales and revenue first, everything else second. They deserve credit for being focused on company culture and listening to employees to a sufficient degree that even I thought they did that well. But at the end of the day, they are a renewable energy retailer focused on growing subscribers and revenue. Wish there was more to it than that, because I definitely signed up for more than that.
