I cannot speak on the entire business, but I briefly worked in the media department at IIL. Keep in mind I’ve never written a poor review for ANY production company.
I have five years of experience as a video editor, and graduated from two film schools—but none of that was respected here. My freelance work was dismissed as illegitimate, my skills were constantly undermined, and my portfolio was clearly never reviewed. I was told this would be a collaborative, growth-oriented opportunity, but instead found there was no production team, no filming—just stock footage stitched together. It was disheartening to realize how little actual filmmaking was happening.
I approached the role with patience and professionalism, but for eight hours a day, I endured a stream of condescending and inappropriate comments. I was asked if I was “one of those feminists” because he had “hired one once and couldn’t work with them.” I was lectured about my chronic illness, my life choices, and even my music—none of which had anything to do with the work. I was promised meaningful creative involvement and instead was treated like a passive assistant. I couldn’t justify staying in such a toxic, ego-driven environment.
Don’t be misled by the polished office or the display of “awards”. This is not a place to grow, collaborate, or do real film work. It’s a place to be diminished. Look elsewhere.
