Vantaggi

Paid time off about 5 weeks. 401k, health insurance, diverse clientele and some of the most dedicated caseworkers. Working here looks impressive on your resume but don’t stay over a year. Everyone gets a 3% yearly regardless if you go above and beyond in your job or just show up to clock in. Most positions are paid hourly, so you can get overtime if they approve of it.

Svantaggi

Management doesn’t care about staff. You can only succeed in the IRC if you’re white or friends with upper management. They hire interns all the time to do real work and take care of cases since they don’t want to add staff or increase existing staff salaries. Most of the money goes to the upper management salary. Clear discrimination and favoritism especially in the New York office. The headquarter is almost disconnected from the resettlement office, they don’t provide any support when an issue is brought up to them. They would just dismiss you. Getting reimbursed for anything you spend your own money on is a nightmare that sometimes I just don’t fill out that form and go through hoops to get $20 or so back. They rarely approve overtime and when you ask for it because you need to finish important work, they will bully you into thinking that you don’t know how to manage your time while in fact you need staff hired in your team to run smoothly but they give you clueless intern that you are supposed to train and have them work like a paid staff. They encourage free labor

Vantaggi

You will meet some amazing and passionate people here who are truly there for the mission. Many came to this country as refugees and immigrants themselves and continue to devote their lives to helping others going through similar experiences. If you end up on the right team, it's an extremely rewarding job.

Svantaggi

Unfortunately, the HQ upper management makes it a toxic place to work. VPs regularly undercut each other publicly (including at all-team meetings and gossiping negatively with staff), especially when potential job cuts were on the horizon. C-Suite didn't listen to staff concerns about upper management and didn't investigate major departures by dedicated staff who left due to poor management despite their dedication to the mission. Leaders picked favorites, ignoring work performance (excusing mediocre performance in some, having high standards for others), and preferred yes-men over staff who wanted to think more critically about the work. Projects were pushed too quickly, despite concerns that it could be detrimental to clients. Positions given to unqualified internal staff who wouldn't be interviewed for the role as external candidates. Senior leaders (director and above) are more focused on keeping their jobs than the mission and will use lower staff work for their own career growth/safety. DEI didn't seem to apply for senior leader roles, where there was little, if any, diversity.
