Vantaggi
World-class collections, smart colleagues, diverse staff, great views of the harbour
Svantaggi
Diversity is great, but the lack of Cantonese speakers in senior management speaks volumes. Bullying, prestige politics, and cutthroat opportunism common in Western museums have been brought by leadership to Hong Kong, anathema to working culture in most other Hong Kong arts organisations. Real diversity protections and inclusion initiatives, e.g. for people with disabilities and underrepresented groups, non-existent (except in the company policies that no one in management follows, utterly without consequence).
At the team level, very unclear roles and responsibilities. No clear overarching strategy to guide staff. No KPIs, making performance reviews arbitrary. Work demands far outpace the capacity of staff. Poorly trained/ under-supported middle management. No opportunities for career progression and/or raises. Absolutely no concern for employees' health or wellbeing. Severe physical illness, mental breaks, crying in the office common.
If you don't value your wellbeing or have no ethical standards, by all means—work at M+!
