I saw the reviews before joining Muc-Off and, like many, had concerns about what was said about the company culture and senior leadership in marketing. Still, I decided to go through the process and accepted the job. At first, things were genuinely great, the team was friendly, the brand is strong and creative, and I was told I was doing “great” by my senior line manager. I genuinely enjoyed working there and was passionate and diligent about my role. Having worked in the bike industry for a while, I understand its chaos. Everything felt right. I must insist that the team is genuinely great and really talented!

Things started to shift around my probation review, which was unexpectedly extended with little explanation. I stayed focused and worked hard, but the extension (described as “an exercise”) created an undercurrent of stress. Feedback became inconsistent and hard to act on: one day I was told I was too interruptive for speaking to colleagues at their desks, the next I was “too quiet.” Like others have mentioned here, support was minimal. There was no real mentoring, and despite putting in the effort, nothing I delivered seemed to meet expectations. I was juggling multiple projects and complex admin (essential work) but was criticised for focusing too much on it. I had no team support and no direct reports, even though that had been part of the role description. Public criticism was common. I was openly compared to colleagues, which undermined confidence and morale. Job roles were poorly defined, leading to confusion and duplication of work. It often felt like everyone was working in different directions with no one actually steering the ship. Micro-management is a real problem preventing senior leadership to focus on strategy or growth, and suggestions for improving systems are usually dismissed outright. The truth is, in the marketing team at Muc-Off, you’re not set up to succeed, you’re replaceable.
