Vantaggi
The company at one time occupied a niche place in tech. If you were interested in GIS, cartography, definitely open source, maybe remote sensing or satellite imagery, and wanted to work in tech, few places were as exciting to be. Mapbox attracted wonderful talent. As a result, you can work with some great engineers, designers, and product managers here. Some teams are well-staffed and stable, working on one of these teams is a great day to day experience. I have a good relationship with my managers. People are generally product- and customer-driven.
Svantaggi
During the recent unionization drive, the executive team (CEO, CSO, CFO, CLO, the whole bunch) happily pitted employees against each other. They drove wedges between international and US employees, called union supporters xenophobes, and generally took every opportunity to make working at the company a stressful, toxic nightmare. The executive team seems pretty blasé about attrition. Over the unionization period, many employees on both sides of the issue left the company, some very senior and high-level. I get the sense that they don't value individual employees here. The company is in the midst of a hard pivot from maps, where it has a dominant position, to search, navigation, auto, and logistics. It's a hard market to corner, and the company is early in this transition. It's not a place to go if you're looking for a quick exit. It's certainly not a great place to work on mapping tech or open source. Maps feel like old news here, and the company really doesn't do open source anymore (this follows broader industry trends). I wish I could rate my experience higher. Prior to the unionization event, I had a wonderful time on my little island. Seeing how the c-suite conduct themselves when the going gets rough really soured me on the whole experience.
