MathWorks is focused on the process and that is seen in every aspect of company life: product releases, promotions/hiring, change to benefits. Everything has to go through a process to get approved. You won't get rich at MathWorks unless you've been there from the start. And the process for getting promoted is vague and the ultimate decision seems to rest in HR's hands, not your dept. Alot of requirements for promotion are things that are out of yoru control, like years of experience.
