Maxwell Locke & Ritter is one of those rare firms where the culture they put out into the world is genuinely what you experience on the inside. It's not a polished version of reality; it's just reality. Being independently owned is a big part of why that's possible. There's no parent company or private equity agenda driving decisions, the firm can put clients and people first, full stop, and that filters into everything. I'm trusted and empowered to make decisions that are actually in the best interest of the firm, not just decisions that go through layers of approval for the sake of optics. That kind of autonomy is hard to find anywhere, let alone in professional services. The talent level across every service line and department is legitimately impressive. These are sharp, collaborative people who take their work seriously without taking themselves too seriously. And the firm's reputation in the Austin community isn't something that happened by accident. It's earned, and you feel that every day in how clients and peers in the industry talk about ML&R. We're proud of our independence. It's not just a business structure, it's a reflection of the firm's values. I genuinely can't picture doing this role, in this industry, for any other company.

Pay was great, people were awesome, location was perfect, work-life balance and benefits were great - in-office snacks and parking paid for.

A few managers on my jobs were willing to help, but service jobs are all based on your clients and your teams. My manager, for a majority of our engagements, was very inpatient and not willing to teach me. For example, she became easily annoyed that I hadn't touched certain sections before, on the scale of their client businesses, and also would become verbally annoyed/aggressive when I would miss a small detail in a WP through her review. My situation was more so manager-fit, but feel that my experience with her overshadowed the work I did and the firm then became unwilling to work with me/teach me and they pushed me out.
