Thank you for taking the time to provide us feedback on your experience here. We’re sorry about the challenges you experienced in your role and the misalignment of fit in the 4 weeks of your tenure here, and wish you best of luck in your future endeavours.
As a small, but rapidly growing startup, MedMe is committed to continuously improving our employee experience. As such, I’d like to address each of the points that were made to provide more clarity and concrete examples of our perspective and improvements.
But in summary:
- We’ve worked hard on improving our onboarding and employee professional development to ensure everyone has the best chance of success at MedMe
- We take professional growth very seriously and that’s why we have an education stipend, PDP plans, mentorship and promote internally
- We’re a small startup with hyper-growth and operate within a fast-paced environment that’s not for everyone
- Work-life balance is something that we really value and try to encourage in our team. We have flexible hours, and a results oriented workplace which means our employees can create a schedule that works for them (whether that’s going skiing during the day or taking off early to have time with their children)
- Employee Growth: This is an area that we care about a lot, in fact, we have brought on many engineers who changed careers (eg. non-profit, IT, and kinesiology to name a few). In fact, multiple employees commented that one of the best things about working here is “the opportunities at MedMe that people from any kind of school/work background/experience are encouraged to take on, even without prior experience”. We constantly promote from within and have seen significant growth in our team members.
Since Q3 2021, we implemented a Mentor system for every new engineering hire to have consistent touchpoints and mentorship in their first 3 months of onboarding, along with regular 1on1s with their direct supervisors and co-founders. Our CEO also implemented a company-wide Professional Development Plan (PDP) with him personally driving progress with each individual personally towards their professional development and goals.
We provide every full-time employee with a yearly professional development stipend to pursue their learning goals. For example, recently our Lead Engineer completed a HL-7 course and our Pharmacist-turned Project Manager started learning Javascript via CodeAcademy out of self-interest. We also regularly share books we’re reading across departments and have a dedicated Slack channel to share resources and learnings.
- Fast-Paced Environment: This is a fair point, as we have 5X’d our customer count in the last year and launched our product successfully to the 2 largest pharmacy chains in Canada. On the back of this growth, we have been hiring consistently and have 4X’d our team size during the same time to ensure that everyone can have time for more impactful, creative, and innovative work rather than just urgent work. As a venture-backed startup, we are focused on innovation and growth as a company, and have found that our most successful team members are those who thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where they are constantly being challenged and learning new skills/tactics on the job.
- Work-Life Balance: As a fast-growing company, this is absolutely something we are constantly working on getting better at. We embrace a work hard, play hard mentality at MedMe, and our growing team all have time for their hobbies and families. For example, we have team members fitting in cross-country skiing in the middle of the day, folks who recently welcomed a new puppy into their family, and our flexible hours allow for time spent with kids.
- Founders: We found these remarks to be both untrue and hurtful. Additionally, we believe that our company is only as strong as the passionate, driven, and ambitious team members part of it and our strong advisory board of pharmacy leaders. This is why we’ve invested hundreds of hours in the last year on ways to improve internal operations, processes, and team happiness/fulfillment. We’ve always valued our employee wellness and invested early in providing comprehensive health benefits, professional development, and team retreats (in Nov we all spent a weekend up at a cottage in the Bruce Peninsula).
Thank you again for your feedback here as it allows us to understand how we’re doing and also communicate transparently the ways we’re improving in these areas. My inbox is always open for feedback and further discussion.
