This workplace is extremely toxic. In terms of software engineering, each team has a different school of thought on how it should be done, some are nitpicky to the point of not being able to get things done in time, others are so relaxed that code quality suffers, and none of them can agree on anything. The demands on engineers are impossible at times and will surely degrade your mental health over time.
Some employees are allowed to work remote 100% of the time, while others on the same team are required to show up to the office four days per week.
HR does not have your best interest in mind, their goal is to appease you until your complacent with your complaint and make sure that the company doesn't incur a lawsuit.
There are events such as a once weekly book club that lasts an hour each week, during lunch. You are told that this is "optional", but it is not. You will be negatively reprimanded for missing it. If you do company sponsored volunteer work, you will be negatively reprimanded for the impact it has on your time commitment. Both situations are a double negative, but they will be sold to you as a positive.
If leadership is not having a good day, it will radiate through the office and the bad mood will become permeate, there is not a lot of ability to control emotion at the top.
