Vantaggi
1. Great technology portfolio. Few companies can match this. 2. Fantastic co-workers, some of the best engineers in the industry. 3. Nice work culture and work-life balance, at least in R&D (deteriorating rapidly). 4. Compensation base + bonus reasonably good for Idaho. 5. Relatively easy to move within the organization. 6. Good on-the-job training for NCGs and Interns.
Svantaggi
1. The location. Let's be honest, Boise is not the most fun place on this planet. The city is inexpensive, and there is a very good reason why. 2. Quite a few teams are understaffed. Add to that, an extreme lack of co-ordination between different teams and tonnes of pointless meetings. 3. Cafetaria. The options are limited and mediocre at best. Virtually nothing for vegetarians. And there are no restaurants in a 5 mile radius which makes things worse. 4. Really slow, tedious and erratic promotion process by industry standards. 5. Continuous shuffles and re-shuffles making life miserable for the engineers. Rolling around like headless chicken rarely help. 6. The new 'rank and yank' system based on PPA which was introduced last year. Scores of really good engineers were kicked out due to this approach, at a time when Micron is one of the most profitable companies in the world (3B+ operating income per quarter, for past 6 quarters). It seems most managers were not in favor of this, but leaders in this company are not really renowned for their fortitude. So, no one took the fight to the upper management. And we are all paying the price now. It has been barely 3 weeks since NYE, and already 10+ engineers resigned and left. And with Intel, YTMC and WD recruiters on the prowl for Micron talent, this is all set to get worse in the coming months. It is just unbelievably frustrating that the engineers who are some of the finest and developing some of the most complex technologies in the world need to go through this pain.
