Vantaggi

Checks always cleared. Benefits were good. Office was cleaned regularly. Heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer. Nice neighborhood. Grocery store across the street.

Svantaggi

In my estimation this company fails to find (and retain) good devs for a few reasons. 1) Huntington Beach is about 50 miles from SoCal's tech hotbed, Santa Monica. Translation: All the good devs aren't anywhere near. 2) Lackluster product. While I admire the executive team's ability to create and run this business I think they would even admit that Insurance Telematics is not very exciting. If you're a GOOD software dev and you can move freely then it's totally a seller's market. With a ton of startups in Santa Monica / West LA working on fun, exciting and COOL projects where you can network with other devs, why would I work 50 miles away on a very unexciting project? 3) Company culture. And by company culture I mean the lack thereof. If you like working in a quiet residential neighborhood in a nondescript office park then maybe this is the place for you. If you like incomplete and ever-changing project specs, maybe this is the place for you. If you like being kept in the dark about the long-term implications of the project you're working, maybe this is the place for you. If you like cowboy coding without proper testing, maybe this is the place for you. If you like hearing management scream at the offshore dev team for their incompetence and then make YOU clean up their mess, maybe this is the place for you. Simply put, in the current market for developers the company culture is more inline with an "Office Space", worker drone type of existence. The projects you work are neither interesting, fun, exciting, fulfilling, able to be bragged about or worthy of putting on your resume. You will wake up every morning dreading to go to work and counting down until 5 when you can go home.

I agree with some of the points made in this review. I assume this employee was part of the company during a transitional period, before we had our new office space, and started scaling up our development teams. We are not in a tech hot bed. We are in a beach town. Some people might like this, others may not. I personally like the more laid back environment. I also like the fact that most of the employees live close by and do not have to commute. Many ride their bikes to work. To each their own. I can see how some people might not think insurance telematics is exciting. Yet, it is an excellent way to generate revenue and build a large user base. It is also only one of the types of solutions we deploy. We also have significant growth in our commercial fleet, and teen driving solutions. What is exciting, to me, is creating solutions that might ultimately improve how someone drives. If something we develop, somehow contributes to creating safer drivers, that is a great thing. To me, it is more fulfilling than creating a consumer product that has no potential for any type of positive effect on the world. The company culture was lacking previously. It is a negative side effect of growing pains and being under-staffed. I like to think that we are quickly emerging from that. Culture is not something that is designed and built by a company. Management can do their best to try to steer a culture, and support aspects of it. However, it is the employees that create the culture. As we continue to grow and add more great people, I think our culture is really starting to blossom. Thank you for the review. I genuinely do care about the opinion of my employees and am constantly striving to improve. Brandon Johnson CEO

Vantaggi

Modus is located very close to the beach, which makes for some pleasant beach trips either before or after work. It's also right next to a grocery store, so if you every lose your bathroom key, you only have to race across the street and not get hit by a car in order to relieve yourself.

Svantaggi

Modus is not a terrible place to work, but it is far from ideal, and unless you're trying to get your foot in the door, why would you want to work for a mediocre company? In terms of the tasks you work on, it is very disorganized, and work is delegated on an ad hoc basis despite attempts to delegate. Frequently, whatever you are working on will set aside to work on a new "hot fix", which will comprise the bulk of your work. You can also look forward to staying late, and occasionally working on the weekend. Expect to catch some flak for leaving on time every now and then. In terms of culture, this is their weakest point. The office is small, quiet, and there's a strong chance you will work in a cubicle. In my time there, there seemed to be absolutely no interest on the part of management to make Modus an attractive place to work.

I appreciate this review. A lot of which was said here was completely true. We were, and are in a phase of some significant growth. We had more customer opportunity than we did developers to create the product needed. This created the mess described in the review. We were chasing our tail, and did not have enough staff to get all of the work done. (hence the long hours). The office was also drab, outdated, and yes, there were cubicles. Here is what changed... In July, we moved into a new office space upstairs. It is about 5X larger than the previous space and was completely remodeled. Developers do not work in cubicles. They mostly work on open tables setup on in pods. However, we have several other spaces people can work. There is a large conference room, and a small conference room. There is a lounge with a couch, comfortable chairs and bean bags. There is a standing desk area. There is also a rec room with more comfortable seating. We encourage people to work wherever they want. This is why we built out all of these spaces. I absolutely did care about creating a better environment, and that is why I made the investment in building out the space. The work hours are under much better control now. We are striving to hire more direct employees, but it is not an easy task for a small company that is located outside of one of the major tech regions. We have more than doubled the size of our development team using both on-shore and off-shore contractors. In the end, we want employees, but the contractors help absorb a lot of the workload making everyone’s life easier. I appreciate the reviewer’s honest assessment of their experience. It helped me make improvements and create a better environment. Brandon Johnson, CEO
