boring atmosphere. the snacks and coffee are never stocked and if so, management never asks what we want. new office space, but cheap ikea furniture, and laptops provided are still hand me downs. if you're not in the upper management circle, be prepared to be ignored. its a dead end job. there is no advancement (even though they say they provide training and work with you.... it's all talk). performance reviews are never done. office is cold all the time because management sets the thermostat and don't listen to you. management doesn't know how to lead and motivate. often loooong hours and work through lunches......... no flexible with time at all.

Modus is a small company consisting of 29 employees as of October 2015. Of the 29 employees, 4 have been employed for less than a year. More than 50% have been here for more than 4 years. There were 4 software developers that were hired, and released in the last twelve months. There are times where people do not work out, and we have expanded our hiring screening to avoid that. We also have a lot of independent contractors that work with us, as we expand our hiring efforts. I can see how the contractors could be perceived as a “rotating door”. Yet, that is not the case with employees. As of now (October 2015) we are making a major effort to scale and expand. We would much rather have employees than contractors. We want a permanent team. Yet, building that team is difficult. As the CEO of a very small company, my door is always open. I frequently meet one-on-one with employees for lunch, or somewhere outside the office environment. I wish that the person who wrote this review would come to me directly with their concerns. It would be much more effective than an anonymous review. If you feel that certain individuals, including management, are not performing up to standard, it should be addressed. This is a small business, we all support our families with this business, and everyone needs to do their part. Although it’s far from standard for a workplace to offer free snacks, we have made an effort. I think any current employee would attest to it being consistently stocked with a big variety. As far as training and advancement, that’s simply not true. We have issued a series of raises to almost 90% of the employee base this year. Naturally, not every single individual deserved a raise beyond a cost of living increase. That’s how it goes. We are paying for multiple employees to advance their education; One employee is obtaining their CPA. Another employee is getting their PMP certification. Another is getting advanced training in graphic design. If an employee wants to learn a skill that somehow applies to the business, we pay for it. This is unique for a company our size. You are correct in that a portion of the furniture is from Ikea. We also replace computers about every two years. I would rather use our resources to truly advance the company, and its employees, than furnish the office with expensive desks. If you dread coming into work, I sincerely apologize. Prior to Modus, I worked at a few different companies, in different industries, and in a variety of positions. On more than one occasion I had jobs that were not the best fit for me. I moved on, and tried something else. One of the most exciting aspects of life is discovering what brings you happiness. Try new things. Find what excites you. Modus is located very close to the beach, which makes for some pleasant beach trips either before or after work. It's also right next to a grocery store, so if you every lose your bathroom key, you only have to race across the street and not get hit by a car in order to relieve yourself.

Modus is not a terrible place to work, but it is far from ideal, and unless you're trying to get your foot in the door, why would you want to work for a mediocre company? In terms of the tasks you work on, it is very disorganized, and work is delegated on an ad hoc basis despite attempts to delegate. Frequently, whatever you are working on will set aside to work on a new "hot fix", which will comprise the bulk of your work. You can also look forward to staying late, and occasionally working on the weekend. Expect to catch some flak for leaving on time every now and then. In terms of culture, this is their weakest point. The office is small, quiet, and there's a strong chance you will work in a cubicle. In my time there, there seemed to be absolutely no interest on the part of management to make Modus an attractive place to work.

I appreciate this review. A lot of which was said here was completely true. We were, and are in a phase of some significant growth. We had more customer opportunity than we did developers to create the product needed. This created the mess described in the review. We were chasing our tail, and did not have enough staff to get all of the work done. (hence the long hours). The office was also drab, outdated, and yes, there were cubicles. Here is what changed... In July, we moved into a new office space upstairs. It is about 5X larger than the previous space and was completely remodeled. Developers do not work in cubicles. They mostly work on open tables setup on in pods. However, we have several other spaces people can work. There is a large conference room, and a small conference room. There is a lounge with a couch, comfortable chairs and bean bags. There is a standing desk area. There is also a rec room with more comfortable seating. We encourage people to work wherever they want. This is why we built out all of these spaces. I absolutely did care about creating a better environment, and that is why I made the investment in building out the space. The work hours are under much better control now. We are striving to hire more direct employees, but it is not an easy task for a small company that is located outside of one of the major tech regions. We have more than doubled the size of our development team using both on-shore and off-shore contractors. In the end, we want employees, but the contractors help absorb a lot of the workload making everyone’s life easier. I appreciate the reviewer’s honest assessment of their experience.
