The staff culture (academic and professional) at Murdoch University is toxic and polarising and has been inherited from executive management teams through the past 10-15 years. That was the main driver for plummeting staff morale leading to Murdoch University ranked as one of the lowest universities in the world (ranked 500-600 prior to 2020 and only a marginal improvement of 400-500 in 2021 World University Rankings). Previous PVCs need to be held accountable for their poor and unprofessional management of this University. Much of the blame also needs to go to the previous executive management that have shown contempt for high calibre and world recognised research staff that were unceremoniously deposed from the University despite their significant research outputs, credibility and international standing. The “hand picked” so called outside “research leaders” recently instated have not shown any leadership qualities whatsoever since their appointments and there is growing resentment from existing staff that managed to elude the Murdoch cull. The jury is still out on the new executive management team. One poor move or decision by executive management team will exacerbate the spiraling demoralisation of staff leading to Murdoch University sliding down the slippery pole from their existing unimpressive World University Ranking. If you are a candidate being considered or have an existing academic or professional position at Murdoch, it’s best you look elsewhere for a career move. Employment at Murdoch University will only jeopardise your career standing. If you are an existing student or considering studying, its best to spend your hard earned money for an education at a reputable University that offer high quality academic and research teaching as this will affect your job prospects and career progression. Murdoch University course content has recently been under scrutiny by the Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency- their University registration was jeopardised in 2021- a reflection on the quality of Murdoch University management that had a significant bearing on the hard working academic staff that persevered with this University . It should be only a matter of time before Murdoch University folds.
