I really enjoyed my time with National Interstate. The work was challenging (in a good way) and my department had a very fun group of people that kept work entertaining. I always felt supported by management and other underwriters to work together. I never felt like I was blamed for mistakes I made and my manager worked to help me instead of criticizing. There was no pressure to quote enough business or hit new business goals (as an underwriter at least), the main focus was on profitable underwriting. It’s a larger company with a small company feel. Very local and a lot of people start their careers there. If I hadn’t moved states, I probably would have worked there for at least 10+ years. Very good career development and pathways to grow your career as long as you’re willing to speak up about your ambitions. They primarily promote from within and I saw it in action.

Like a lot of insurance companies, some of the systems are a little outdated. They’re in the process of updating critical systems, but it’s a constant work in progress. Some of the processes can be tedious.
