A significant downside of working at Newmont is the growing disconnect between corporate leadership and the people on the ground. In recent years, there's been a noticeable erosion of the strong culture that once defined the company. Many employees feel undervalued and unsupported, leading to widespread disengagement where individuals do just enough to meet expectations. Internal advancement opportunities are increasingly rare, with key roles often filled by external hires lacking mining experience. This creates frustration among seasoned employees who feel overlooked despite their contributions. Advancement can often depend more on internal sponsorship by senior leaders than on merit or performance. The rate of stress-related leave is alarmingly high, and despite operating in a favorable market, the company continues to cut headcount—often without fully assessing individual value or skill. As a result, many high performers are leaving, leading to a growing brain drain that could impact Newmont’s performance and culture for years to come. This speaks to a deeper issue with the current organizational design and leadership approach.

Newmont has gone through 5 layoffs in 5 years. The most recent is currently ongoing with an estimated 3000 people globally being let go. The last layoff ended in April and employees were told that it would be the last one for awhile. This layoff was announced in August, so 4 months is all they went without starting another one. The employees don't trust the company anymore because of the repeated lies about layoffs. Newmont says they aren't making money with gold at record highs yet they are building all new offices in Australia and Costa Rica that are state of the art. If you have the choice go somewhere else. The other big issue is that no one in management takes harassment or retaliation seriously. Even when it's a Senior Manager harassing their employees (me). I went to HR and the managers boss, everyone swept it under the rug. The manager then retaliated against me for going to HR, I brought that up to HR and was told "no he is allowed to say what he wants and pull you from any task for any reason".
