Vantaggi
While the title of my review is strongly negative, I have to admit that ofcom can be an exciting place to work in. The services offered by the organisation are very important for the telecoms industry, offering a great amount of job satisfaction to the employees. Ofcom employs some very bright people. Working in such a intellectual environment is indeed delightful. Working for the regulator exposes you to diverse aspects of the industry, ranging from technical details to economic and business models, and policy and legal arguments. It is difficult to find this mix of experiences in some other organisation. Finally, the graduate scheme run by the organisation is of a high standard. If you are a graduate considering Ofcom as an option, go for it. You get exposed to most of the functions in the organisation, you are asked to manage small projects and you get unique work exposure and experience.
Svantaggi
The main problem of Ofcom is the appreciation of skills, qualifications and hard work. Don't be fooled by the large salary expectations published on the company's website. There are hardly any payrises given. My advise is *negotiate* during the interview process. Think of the salary you want to have in 2-3 years and negotiate hard for that. Once you are employed payrises will be *below inflation*, subject to achieving a first class performance review. If your performance review is anything less than the highest you will get *no* payrise. Another advise I have is not to think that your qualifications and working experience will make you stand out of the crowd and grow within the company. These are not appreciated at all. For the avoidance of doubt, this review is written by someone who has received the highest grade in company appraisals since I joined Ofcom.
