They hire friends and families without former interviews. Too much growing pain - goals switching too rapidly. Because of the fact that leadership groups are only listen to the employees who are already their friends and families and they clearly lack in domain knowledge, they set the goals unnecessarily complicated or sometimes even irrelevant. In data scientist team, most of people are fresh out of phd program so they think their thought process is perfect (and all others are wrong) and don't ask around much. If you are friend and family of leadership group, then your way of doing things will be easily accepted - and you will be very successful in the company.
