Vantaggi

There used to be some interesting problems to work on and there are still some very smart people who work there. Base comp is decent and benefits are standard for a tech company.

Svantaggi

The entire company is dysfunctional and morale is at an all time low. The stock price continues to nose dive and upper management is panicking as they watch their net worth disappear into thin air. The recent changes to the company's mission and goals has been poorly executed and caused significant damage across the company. They continue to lose their most talented employees and refuse to hire the most necessary positions. Instead, upper management chooses to hire and promote their friends into useless positions that add no value to the company. They then sit there and wonder why they can't deliver to their clients on time. Career advancement and opportunities are a joke unless you're buddies with the management team. Certain managers continually get promoted with less than a year in their current position while individual workers actually getting stuff done don't receive any recognition for the hard work they do. All you have to do is look at the LinkedIn profiles of some of the managers to see how ridiculous their progression through the career ladder has been. Upper management blatantly lies to their employees and does exactly the opposite of what they tell them. I love how Dan sends a damage control email after the stock price drops over 30% in a single day firmly stating that the company finances are fine and that it is a Wall St overreaction. Before that, he had also stated there wouldn't be anymore lay offs in the near future. Of course, that all ends up being a lie as apparently the finances are not great and they had to lay off a significant portion of their employees. That's less than 6 months after a previous round of layoffs. Thanks, Dan! If you're thinking about joining this company, do yourself a favor and don't. There is really no reason to get aboard this sinking ship.

Thank you for the feedback. When you step back, Opower is in the strongest position the company has ever been, both strategically and financially. 2015 marked a record year for our sales team, with massive renewals and expansions by Opower’s biggest clients. In Q4 alone, we closed the two largest deals in company history. In addition to strong renewals and new business wins, Opower also successfully launched a series of new products including NextWeb and Bill Advisor; and completed the rollout of its software platform. Opower is positioned extremely well for continued success. We entered 2016 with a revenue backlog of nearly half a billion dollars, $100 million cash on hand, and no debt. For more on Opower’s financials - see our public investor center website. In the midst of all this success, we’ve taken significant steps to ensure that Opower remains one of the best places to work in the world. Opower recently announced a dramatically expanded parental leave policy—increasing total parental leave to 16 weeks. We also announced an unlimited PTO policy, building on Opower’s already generous time off.

Everyone was friendly to work with. Surprisingly well run as a company.

Svantaggi

Not sure how their culture has changed after being acquired by Oracle. Betting it was for the worse.

Vantaggi

Every day at Opower was inspiring - the people are smart, new ideas are always being brought to the table, and everyone is motivated to do their best work because the company is doing good things for the world. People take each other seriously at work but also have so much in common that you end up with many friends outside of the office, and those relationships range across all levels - I count my old manager as one of my closest friends and will always turn to some of the company's senior leadership for life and career advice.

Svantaggi

Though things settled down a bit post-IPO, I'd still say work/life balance is tough at Opower. People work hard because they love what they do, but they're still working really, really hard. Also, the transition from one primary product line to multiple product lines has been rocky, particularly as oil prices have been tanking and screwing with the entire industry. As the energy world settles out so too will Opower, as long as they solidify their newer products.
