Vantaggi
I enjoyed the work of helping students virtually; I thought it was an innovative enough platform, and I especially liked essay reviews -- before the introduction of the useless AI.
Svantaggi
Both colleagues and higher-ups, were, frankly, not cut out for working in education. Fellow tutors acted like virtual students demanded hazard pay and benefits, and generally ignored that this was a part-time job, and always was going to be. (I gather some of the people hired before me were promised differently, but the situation had changed by the time I was hired in late 2022, and I understood that, so I'm not sure why they didn't?) That said, higher-ups and management had to deal with a corporate leadership culture who just wanted to experiment with education tech, who didn't actually understand key principles of tutor pedagogy. Training was inconsistent, especially because it overly became about hitting the right metrics and using the AI (which, again, didn't work that well, and the kids could see right through it). As someone who did a lot of distanced learning when I was growing up (pre-covid), I would've loved getting tutored by people at Paper. It's too bad the company seems to have sunk itself. Truly, the Titanic of innovative educational models.
