Vantaggi

The biggest pro is that you can choose your own hourly rate and the company charges a fee on top of your rate and bills the client. You never have to worry about getting paid—even if your clients are behind in their payments to the company, P+P still pays you on time. I worked as a contract tutor with Peer+Plus (P+P) for over 5 years. The company is run by Learning Specialists who really care about you and your students. The services they provide to clients go well beyond what you do as a tutor. That is, they offer educational testing to gather information about the students’ levels of functioning so they can make recommendations regarding what style of teaching will best suit your student. They offer A LOT of support to their tutors. As a tutor, you have a designated coordinator who you report to weekly via phone and/or email. You also write simple reports after each tutoring session just to say what you did and how your student is progressing. Another great thing is that they call you with leads and match you with clients. You don’t have to do any marketing and you have the backing of a company. You always have the opportunity to accept or decline a new client. In essence, you can take on as much or as little work as you want, depending on what’s out there and if your tutoring skill set matches a given client’s needs. You just have to be willing to drive around and meet students in their homes. You can specify the area you want to service, but if you really want to work, you might make exceptions to how far you’re willing to travel. My biggest caseload was 7 students at one time. The only reason I left this job is because I got accepted into graduate school. I would work for them again in a heartbeat.

Svantaggi

1. All tutors are considered contractors, so you have to pay attention to your own finances when tax time rolls around. I don’t really consider this a con, but it’s something to keep in mind. 2. If you don't have a reliable form of transportation, you won't be able to work for P+P.
