Not-for profit status without share holders to satisfy with it the ability to operate with lower operating margins. Strong active union. Made 43.5 million dollars on 2013 with 1.3 billion in cash on hand. Operating margin almost double the average for not-for profits. Strong philanthropic arm raising money for equipment. Many hidden revenue streams.

Dominant market share in most of the markets it operates in so there is no need to be competitive with compensation or benefits. Generous compensation for executives like Yordy but not even pegged to middle of the Portland market for labor despite what Sr. Nunsel says. Labor is actually pegged to the bottom of the Portland market. Very top heavy organization while labor is cut to the bone leaving no room for sick calls or for seasonal fluctuations in patient census. Becoming very corporate and the culture toxic. Nepotism is rampant. Very little advancement opportunity unless you are related to someone. Managers with associate degrees and even regional CEOs with only BA in business have been promoted leading to large egos with small minds making very poor decisions. Very little investment in staff development. About 208 million invested in the Oregon region shamefully small investment even by "union breaking" John HIll's estimate. HR is merely a lap dog of the administration arriving with their minds made up to bully or silence anyone with a brain and a voice. Even the elite professionals like hospitalist doctors are treated poorly and inhumane production demands are placed on them. They were threatened with an RFP and looks like the hospital administrators are going to replace them with Sound Physicians inc from Washington who was slappped with a 14.5 million dollar civil fine for billing irregularities from the department of justice over an 8 year period. Too heavy a reliance on its flag ship hospital in Springfield, OR. River bendover and Ketchme if you can in Alaska. They are the only two with healthy operating margins. the rest are all running with operating margins of 1 or less in their 9 hospital system. This is becasue they forgot about their healing mission and tried to grow too fast too soon. Every executive seems to think doctors and nurses and support staff are stupid and ignorant because the quality and quantity of double talk is insulting. They want top quaity employees but don't want to pay for it, train or even support them. They want "maximum flexibility." Get ready to bend over.
