Vantaggi
Free coffee, 1 free pastry or heated item or bagel per shift (a "freebie"), you'll meet cool people -- both team members and customers alike, and no uniform (obviously don't wear competitor's stuff). It was a great place to network prior to the COVID-19 pandemic; you'll meet lots of people from all walks of life. You'll also get Healthcare benefits (Health, Vision, Dental) but you need to work 20 hours minimum per week.
Svantaggi
- You're overworked and underpaid here. They want you to bust out 4-6 drinks every 5 minutes or so while engaged with friendly and not-so-friendly customers. They train you to maintain a 3-drink flow but demand is so high; customers often bulk order, so you'll have maybe 1-2 drinks for one customer and 12 for another. - Quarterly Poll Survey has turned into a Bi-Annual Survey, so instead of providing feedback to upper management and the Home Office every fiscal quarter, it's only twice a year. Survey has to be completed on-the-clock as well. Even if you complete the survey, they won't likely act on any feedback given. - Store Leaders tend to play favorites among the baristas. - The Home Office lacks diversity. - They promote from within, but again, Store Leaders play favorites. Either you're one of them or not. Sometimes they'll hire someone from the outside to become a Team Lead instead of giving you the promotion. - Team Leads are often given a lot of work with the bar already set high. If you won't say "yes" to every paying customer, then you'll be reprimanded. Even if it doesn't make any sense at all. - Challenging customers left and right with their complex requests. - If you open up your entire availability to the company, you'll get less than what you requested. You will have to hunt for hours, whether it'd be covering team member's shifts or checking their Legion app (scheduling/communications app) from other stores. - You may only get a series of 4.5 hours per shift. - HR threatened a lot of furloughed employees (due to COVID-19 pandemic) by demanding them to come back to work or "voluntarily resign." They make said employees jump through hoops in order to prove that they or someone they are living with are immunocompromised. - No hazard pay during the pandemic. - There has been several cases where upper management has been sexist and/or racist. - Homeless people who actually pay for coffee are often time kicked out, whether by upper management or building security. - Philz Coffee was so focused on expansion that they forgot what made their coffee great in the first place: the baristas. the coffee bartender. the artists. the students. We're reduced to mere numbers for them in this game of profits.
