Vantaggi

Benefits are excellent. Non-corporate environment. Depending on where you are, you may or may not get to interact with students or visiting luminaries.

Svantaggi

The institution is stodgy and behind the times in a lot of ways. We've just come through a pandemic with 5-day/week work from home, but that won't be allowed from now on even though it's been very successful. There's little to no concern that this decision means staff will leave. HR policies are outdated--very top-down structure with little to no recourse if you're at/near the bottom (and HR is unhelpful unless you're in management), so if you're saddled with a terrible manager, there's nothing you can do. Real reluctance to move with the times as an employer, while simultaneously claiming to be at the forefront of everything. The culture in some departments is great; in others it is downright toxic, and no one seems to care, because the university believes its own propaganda. The most recent staff survey was frustratingly superficial, designed to ensure that the results confirmed that everything's just great and nobody needs to change anything.

Vantaggi

Incredible benefits, worth 40% of your salary. So much time off it's hard to use. Great health care, 36 hour work week (if your boss doesn't make you work more), slow-paced.

Svantaggi

So much time off it's hard to use it all without losing it with annual rollover caps. Pay is terrible. In theory, you come for the benefits and the lighter, less frenetic workload but that very much depends on who your boss is and what team you work for. I worked for a very mismanaged research center where my manager expected everyone to be available 24 hours a day. Most PU departments operate at a snail's pace, no sense of urgency even on urgent things. Independent faculty doing cool things but the institution is very lowercase c conservative. No pathway for advancement, especially on smaller teams.
