Vantaggi

The art department is a fantastic team of people who support and work well with each other, which is most of the reason why many of us haven't already resigned.

Svantaggi

Our team is quite micro-managed by leadership and sales. Punch is more of a trend-chasing company than trend-forward, so be prepared to copy a lot of existing artwork and designs that sales sends to the art department, and be ready to do it at breakneck speed to appease our unreasonably demanding clients. There’s not any wiggle room for any creative interpretation. Designers are given the exact colors, fonts, embellishments, and placement to use within assignments, and anything otherwise is considered wrong. We are expected to know an ungodly amount of expert knowledge about hundreds of different products, all having different specifications for different potential clients. Due to this we waste countless hours and dollars trying to fix errors that we couldn’t possibly have ever had the foresight to know when items are expected to go into production before we know the scope of how we should have prepped it. We are expected to take a 'jack-of-all-trades' approach to everything, so whatever knowledge you need to cram into your brain this week will be gone next week when the next project is assigned. The company refuses to invest in an editor or proofreader, so tens of thousands of products are mis-printed every year when nobody has the time or energy to look over product thoroughly. Leadership has taken an anti-remote stance on work for the art team despite the fact that 95% of the work can easily be done remotely. A lucky few have worked out sweetheart deals to work remote, but most get denied. The company is still stuck in the 80s when it comes to office culture. Many Los Angeles offices offer perks such as flexible scheduling, hybrid work options, bonus opportunities, flex days, etc to attract and keep talent. That is not the case here. Salaries have been stagnant for several years, with many members of the art team making the minimum legally allowed pay rate for California, which is insane for the skillsets we are required to possess (not to mention the cost of living in the Los Angeles area), and the amount of time and energy it takes to onboard new hires for this department. Due to all of the above, the sense of morale is in a perilous place. We have a shared understanding of how unreasonable the hoops we have to jump through are, but the mentality is ‘just push through, things will get better’, though they never do. Burnout levels are at an all-time high.

We appreciate your time in posting your work experience at Punch Studio. We welcome all feedback, are committed to hearing your suggestions, and are open to the opportunity of discussing your concerns in more detail offline. Punch Studio is in the wholesale business and with this said our designs and trends are in fact greatly determined by our customers. The company is in agreement, our design team is very talented and their contributions are appreciated. As for the workload, as expected with any medium-sized business, every product produced goes through a rigorous process to ensure that it is both aesthetically pleasing to our buyers and passes quality standards. We feel that our compensation and benefits are competitive and we offer flexibility wherever possible. As you know, our company has been very transparent with all employees on our inability to offer pay increases for the last two years. Punch Studio is not unlike many others facing factors outside of our control; namely the tariffs, the pandemic, and most recently the increased freight costs and supply chain challenges. Due to the nature of our business, we have not been able to offer company-wide remote opportunities, however, the majority of the creative department is currently working remotely and has been since the start of the pandemic. We value the opinions of all our employees and would like to better understand the reference to management setting unrealistic expectations and micromanaging employees and encourage you to speak with a member of our HR team if you are uncomfortable speaking directly to your manager.

Vantaggi

Everyone is professional and helpful. Many people have been here over 10 years (some over 25 years!) If you are a hard worker and show interest, there are paths for promotion. The offices are lovely and nice location. Work loads are manageable but you are always busy.

Svantaggi

If you want to be promoted, you do need to advocate for yourself and express your interest, and it may take some time, just like at most companies.

Vantaggi

I had a great time working here. I loved my team and made good friends along the way. Judging from the other responses, I guess I was lucky to be in a great team because I felt supported through every moment of my time here. I felt I got plenty of guidance and personal growth. Sure it got busy at times, but everyone hauled *** when needed so you aren't alone when that happens.

Svantaggi

I wish I had more clarity on what growth path I can have. It seems like I might've been stuck in my position if someone above me hadn't left. Some people around the office gossip about others a lot, which has made me uncomfortable at times. Especially the ones who do that and then run to HR for any little inconvenience. Some people just don't know how to separate feelings from work.
