This is a very friendly company to work for: the vast majority of your colleagues are very down to earth and fun. The progression at this company happens more quickly than at other companies, although this is partially linked to periods of high turnover (which is common in the hospitality industry). This makes it a good place to start early in your career, as you can gain experience doing lots of varied tasks early on, especially on the Graduate scheme, which is great for anyone seeking varied experience specifically in the hospitality sector. It has been encouraging to see the graduate scheme improve over time. There are some extraordinarily talented people that work here. Overall, I'm glad I worked at Quarter because of the skills I learned and the people I met: shout out to the recruitment team who do an excellent job at finding great people.

Quarter is ultimately hindered by senior management's unwillingness to listen to their operational teams. There seems to be a real disconnect between the teams on the ground and London-based management, who continually push for higher profit targets without a hope of the teams meeting them. It's extraordinarily demotivating to know that even if your unit is at 100% capacity, or otherwise doing well in the local market, you are still thousands of pounds away from your profit target. Furthermore, senior management micromanage small day to day decisions and details whilst simultaneously lacking a thorough understanding of daily operations. This feedback often comes from the founder of the company, who would benefit from having more senior staff in the company that are willing to challenge his opinions. It does seem like decisions are often made based on appealing to his personal preferences, as opposed to what would genuinely progress the company and improve guest experience, which can be really frustrating when you care about doing right by your customers. Salaries at Quarter are low, which is due in part to being in the hospitality industry. Quarter does however utilise bonus schemes that as previously mentioned adhere to unachievable and demotivating targets, meaning that after reaching a certain level, you will are very unlikely to receive them, depending of course on your position. The company does not pay sick pay, because as an SME, it doesn't legally have to. Even though people have no financial motivation to call in sick, it is still discussed in meetings as if it is a intentional act to skip work. The vast majority of teams operate on skeletal basis, so when people do call in sick or even have planned leave, there is little to no framework to support the team, and people are expected to cover for multiple roles with no financial compensation or even recognition. Compared to other local employers, there is work to be done. Finally, the restaurant and hotels sides of the business regularly clash and encounter miscommunication issues. These can become nasty beyond professional boundaries, and there seems to be a tolerance from some individuals that this is 'just how they are', especially if they have been at the company for years or have seniority. Having worked on both sides, I can understand the frustrations from various perspectives, but there is a huge divide in the company that is exacerbated by clashing priorities and a general resentment for anyone 'from the other side.' The majority of this pressure does seem to come from senior management, as everyone fights for revenue for their individual units to succeed/survive.

I’m really pleased that you viewed our company as a good place to start your career – you are right that there are opportunities, both because we are an expanding company and when people leave. We advertise most positions internally before we post them externally to make sure our existing team have the best chances of progression. We do have some fantastic people working with us, so we're really pleased to hear that you found this too! I’m also really encouraged to hear your comments about the improvements we’ve made to the graduate scheme – it is a varied scheme that we hope gives our new starts the grounding they need to take their careers further at Quarter. We are open to feedback about the scheme to ensure it meets the requirements! I’m disappointed to hear the ‘cons’ you mention in your review but want to thank you for flagging them. It is true that we have a fairly comprehensive bonus structure here at Quarter – these bonuses are, largely, driven by two key metrics; financial performance and operational performance. The two operate independently of each other. Financial performance is driven by our performance against our agreed budgets which are agreed in August each year for the financial year ahead (our financial year runs September to August). There are obviously many things that affect a unit’s financial performance but the unit managers are all involved in the writing of their annual budget and as a company, we do believe that the results we are striving for are achievable. We do regular benchmarking with our salaries to ensure that they are in line with other positions within the industry and review all our salaries annually and ahead of any major changes to team structure. Whilst we do not offer corporate sick pay, we do offer statutory sick pay of course. We do not believe it is the case that we allow people to carry out multiple roles without financial compensation or recognition. Finally, we will look into the miscommunication issues you refer to between the restaurants and hotels. We do have a friendly rivalry between the units, but we’ve found that when there are disagreements, a middle ground is usually found and agreed upon – we're sorry if you experienced this differently. As much as there is friendly rivalry, we are all working towards the common goal of making Quarter a success. We will certainly review this and see where improvements can be made. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and feedback about our Hospitality and Events Management Graduate Scheme. We appreciate you highlighting your experience and suggestions. Our Graduate Scheme is designed to give future leaders a broad, hands-on understanding of a hospitality and events business from hotels and restaurants to property management, our co-working space, and event planning. We believe that the best managers are formed from having worked out front in our venues, on the ground side-by-side with the team and our customers. Our graduates who roll up their sleeves and muck in with our teams tend to see the best success and enjoyment on the scheme, becoming empathetic managers down the line with a well-rounded knowledge of day-to-day life in our venues – whether they go on to hotel or restaurant management, head office roles, or events management positions. Those with hospitality experience (and those without!) are welcome to apply for this graduate scheme. Those with experience tend to find they enjoy the ‘known’ aspect of their day-to-day work in the venues, combined with the learning and development aspect of working through their graduate training plan, building skills and knowledge in the area of core business functions - from operations, HR, and marketing to budgeting, forecasting, and team leadership. Regarding your suggestion about increased choice in the rotational aspects of the programme, we completely understand the desire for flexibility. We have 5 graduates on the scheme at any one time, each working their respective rotations in separate areas, rotating to their new spots on the same date. As such, graduates follow a set pattern of rotations to ensure fairness and consistency across each intake. Because we have a small cohort on the scheme, allowing individual choice would unfortunately mean that some participants could miss out on essential placements. This structure ensures that everyone experiences the same opportunities and develops a well-rounded skill set.
