Regarding safety, let me begin with a quote that speaks for itself from the CEO to a member of the "safety" committee: "Your job is not to keep this company safe, your job is to protect my personal liability. " The building lacks fire alarm and sprinkler systems, because apparently installing them is too expensive but renting out a separate suite for years that has them installed is not. Fire drills are conducted by having someone running around the building with an air horn. Enforcement of wearing proper PPE is lax. Safety glasses rated for impact are considered suitable for chemical splash. (OSHA would have a field day) Regarding management: I was told by my manager (an engineer mind you) that I am "too mathematical" and focus too much on statistics when designing experiments and writing reports. This comment was a symptom of a greater issue within the company which is that there is little to no quality data and statistical analysis. I was also ordered by my manager to alter the wording of a report to change the conclusions of an experiment I did. I complied but my alterations were deemed not good enough and my report was altered behind my back. To top it all off, my data was sent to a third party data scientist to verify my conclusions because apparently they don't trust their own personnel. The silver lining was that data scientist ultimately agreed with me. In my free time, I created a project to automate my data analysis workflow in Excel to instead use Python which was primarily motivated by the inability of my under-powered company issued laptop to handle Excel files with +100K lines of data. My project was successful and I even made a presentation to describe its merits but I was told by my manager "If I don't know how to use it, then we're not using it." This was despite being able to turn a normally 20-30 min procedure into a matter of clicking a button and letting it run for a minute. This review is getting a little long so I will just touch on organization/cleanliness: -You spend half your time finding tools and components when building something. -R&D "workshop" is understocked and chronic victim of tragedy of the masses ( Harbor Freight quality tools, tools and materials strewn about etc.) -For a company that makes semiconductor manufacturing equipment and has a couple cleanrooms, the rest of the space is filthy and covered in dust and other detritus. There are plenty of others reasons that I could go into, but as you can see, I highly would not recommend working here especially if you are in your 20's and desire work family and colleagues around your age among other things.

Heavy responsibility for all employees who want to work. Can know everything just by asking. Learning, risk taking, and innovation is heavily encouraged. All employees involved with key projects have high impact and sense of worth. I do more work that my friends at other companies, but not too much more and I seem to have gained much more knowledge and experience. Most engineers have broad skill sets. Pretty interesting diverse environment. Wide range of education levels, ages, experiences, very heavy minority population with many languages spoken. All engineers have the opportunity to become key employees and earn strong salaries, job security. This would be more difficult at a large company. I would take another job if it was competitive, but I am comfortable and still growing in my role.

Growing company with rapid adoption of new processes and frequent restructuring to align with company needs. No longer run by Founder which increases day to day stability but might be less fun for some people. Work politics seem probably average but I am not sure.
