Vantaggi

As a smaller company you do get to venture into areas that you may not be able to at a large publicly traded company. More responsibility via larger design projects and project management can be within your grasp sooner if you prove you're up to it.

Svantaggi

If you would like to take advantage of the early move into more responsibility (project management for example) make sure you do it because it interests you not because you're looking for a salary boost. Any new responsibility you take on will be spun to be a great opportunity for your career development instead of you providing more value to the company. Seems to me like everyone is rushed through the technical as fast as possible to become a project manager. The result is that the 5-15 year range has mostly become PM's and is not interested in banging out any technical work and sometime lacks the technical knowledge to support younger staff. Management seems to think that they can throw a body (any body) at a task and manage their way to success. The result is a lot of interns and entry level engineers, and very few mid level and upper level experienced engineers that still do technical work.

Vantaggi

Great people that are knowledgeable and experts in water and wastewater treatment and master planning, they stay on the cutting edge of design for a smaller firm, you're not just a number to them, fun and engaging work, freedom to win work with full company support, good business savvy, quick to respond to recommended changes and input from all staff levels. The owner is a phenomenal person (he is my role model) and actively engaged with clients and staff which is a rare find. Plan to stay in touch with the good people at Reiss for many years to come. They now have 10 owners and look to be expanding their owner base which is a great step towards a long term healthy firm that will stay privately owned and benefit the staff and have a direct impact on loyalty to the firm. Oh and excellent pay and bonuses, they definitely show respect to employees, and it is everyone at all levels so the profits are shared very well and the hard work is rewarded.

Svantaggi

Consulting engineering requires some long hours to meet deadlines and keep clients happy but Reiss definitely tried to maintain and cultivate a good work life balance as much as as possible. They had a well organized structure to try to balance the demands of consulting.
